Society starts pet
program for seniors

The Hawaiian Humane Society is initiating a new adoption program called "Seniors for Seniors," which will pair senior citizens with mature pets.

Mature animals, usually calm, house-trained and well-behaved, make ideal pets for older people, the society said in a news release.

The adoption fee will be waived for people 60 years and older who adopt two cats or one dog, 6 years of age or older.

They will also receive free pet adoption kits, and the animal's free spay/neuter surgery, microchip identification and veterinary exam by the Humane Society.

Seniors may also request a specific type, size or temperament of dog or cat, and will be notified when a senior pet matching the description is available.
