Natural beauty
LYNNE MASUYAMA has her husband to thank for leading her to photography. Five years ago, he informed her of his plan to write a hiking book, and further, that he was relying on her to shoot the pictures for it.
"All I had was a point-and-shoot, and no experience," Masuyama says. "The results weren't good."
The ordeal led her to purchase a better camera and enroll in classes. Soon after, she found herself joining three photography clubs. The shutter bug had bitten.
Ever since, Masuyama takes her camera out on the hiking trail. She and husband, Stuart M. Ball, are longtime members of Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club. The couple goes on backpacking trips twice a year at various national state parks. The photographs on these two pages are from their travels.
On a trip along the Colorado River, Lynne Masuyama discovered petroglyphs near Moah, Utah.
Masuyama sees her hobby as a way to share her experiences on the trail with other folks.
"My goal in taking hiking photos is to show people who can't to go where we go the beauty out there."
