Whoever wrote the blueprint for winning in unthinkable ways at Castle High School has done a remarkable job.

The Knights' basketball team found another way to pull out a close one last night, roaring back from what looked like sure defeat to upset Windward rival Kalaheo 48-41.

"They're the cardiac kids," Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli said after his Knights climbed to 5-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division standings. "This one was a lot like our first four games. We made the key plays at the end."

In previous games, the Knights edged McKinley in overtime, rallied late to beat Kahuku and Farrington, and barely held on to top Moanalua.

The victories are reminiscent of the Knights' football team, which kicked and clawed its way to an improbable OIA title and an equally surprising second-place finish in the state tournament.

With just over a minute left, Castle's Emmett Aberilla put up a high-arcing 3-point attempt. He watched the ball roll off his fingertips and eventually settle through the rim to give the Knights a 43-41 edge. It was their first lead of the night, and it put the Mustangs in desperation mode for the first time.

"We had opportunities to put 'em away, put 'em down by about 10 or 12, but we let them hang around," Kalaheo coach Pete Smith said. "Castle did a great job in the fourth quarter and we turned the ball over twice in key situations and missed shots. We just didn't finish the game."

After Mustangs center Sam Wilhoite dropped in two free throws for a 41-38 lead, Kalaheo went to a delay game, but it backfired as Zane Cabral was called for traveling.

Castle's Charles Teixeira hit two from the line to make it 41-40, and when Cabral's bounce pass was intercepted by William Harvest, the Knights broke out and put the ball in Aberilla's hands.

"As soon as it left my hand, I had the feeling I was going to make it. I had a lot of confidence on that shot," Aberilla said about the game-turning trey.

Kalaheo (3-1) missed three shots in the final minute -- 3-point attempts by Theodore Fujita-Lukachyk and Cabral and a put-back try by Wilhoite.

Wilhoite was dominant inside and finished with a game-high 18, but he'd rather have the win.

"We didn't execute, and choked at the end," Wilhoite said. "It wasn't one of our best games. We weren't hitting shots and didn't take care of the ball at the end. It was very disappointing."

Castle wrapped up the victory on Harvest's free throw and two by Bryan Pelangka. Harvest added a layup in the final seconds after the Mustangs' last miss.
