Keiter earns
Big Five honorSports broadcasting legend Les Keiter will be inducted into Philadelphia Big Five Hall of Fame next week.
Keiter called Big Five basketball games on radio and television from 1963-70. He will be among five inductees honored at a Hall of Fame luncheon Friday. The induction ceremony will be held Saturday during halftime of the Penn-St. Joseph's basketball game at the Palestra on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
"I'm very excited and flattered by it," Keiter said. "I figured after all these years none of this is going to happen, but it keeps happening."
The Big Five is comprised of the major colleges in the Philadelphia area -- LaSalle, Penn, St. Joseph's, Temple and Villanova -- and Keiter said the atmosphere and level of play at the Palestra during his tenure in Philadelphia was "the greatest I've ever seen."
"I called it 'Panicsville USA,' " Keiter said. "You had four student bodies yelling at each other the whole time. It was just electric. I've never seen college basketball at such a fever pitch."
Keiter is already a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Washington Sports Hall of Fame, Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Hawaii Sports Circle of Honor.
