Hawaii Pacific basketball coach may have hit upon the secret for Hawaii teams to win on the road -- turn the travel back on the home team. HPU ends Billings’ streak
From staff and wire reports
Aaron Abrams scored 28 points and Marvin Noble added 17 as the Sea Warriors beat Montana State-Billings 72-71 at Billings last night. The Sea Warriors did more than break service in the conference, though, they broke the longest home winning streak in the nation.
The Yellowjackets (6-6, 0-4) had won 38 straight home games dating back to 2000 before the Sea Warriors (12-2, 1-1) surprised them. They had not lost a conference game since the previous year, when HPU beat them.
It was no normal home game for the Yellowjackets, though, as they returned from a 3-game swing in Hawaii just last week. And that is what HPU coach Russell Dung attacked.
"Just a couple of days ago they played in Hawaii," Dung said. "So we wanted to make it a fast paced game and force them to run with us. That's our strength and they looked kind of fatigued. We kind of turned the travel against them."
Brigham Young-Hawaii 103, Western New Mexico 62: At Silver City, N.M., Alexus Foyle exploded for 35 points as the Seasiders (8-1, 0-3) remained undefeated in the conference by beating the winless Mustangs (2-9, 0-3).
Scott Salisbury scored 12 points and Jeremy Frampton added 11 for the Seasiders.
Chaminade 78, UH-Hilo 72: At Hilo, Mike Donegan scored 18 points to give the Silverswords (4-0, 9-7) sole possession of the top spot in the conference by beating the Vulcans (3-1, 11-5).
