The Iolani basketball team has played more overtime minutes this year than most teams play in a season. Raiders will never forget
5-overtime game in BostonBy Nick Abramo
nabramo@starbulletin.comRight now, the Raiders' minds are on defending their Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state titles, but it's doubtful coach Mark Mugiishi and his boys will forget the five-overtime game of Dec. 28 anytime soon.
"It was pretty amazing," Mugiishi said about the 100-96 loss to Brookline (Mass.) in the Boston Shootout.
"It was like having five overtime experiences packed into one game."
Boston Herald writer Dan Ventura was highly impressed with the play of Iolani guards Derrick Low and Ryan Hirata.
"They were one of the classiest teams you're gonna find," Ventura said about the visiting Raiders. "They just got in tons of foul trouble as the game wore on.
"Hirata (7 of 8 on 3-pointers) was shooting out of this world, and Low had 31 points and a great game."
Mugiishi said Low hit two free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to OT and also twice hit 3-pointers to bring the game to another period.
"The game was 2 hours, 45 minutes and because of the way it was going, I never subbed Derrick out," Mugiishi said.
"It was close in the beginning, the middle and the end, and Brookline was pressing us the whole game and Derrick continued to bring the ball up for us," he added.
"A couple of times on defense, you could see he was tired and had a hard time keeping up, but not from a lack of effort."
Ventura said forwards Bobby Nash and Chad Miller fouled out, while Hirata left with cramps in the third overtime.
The Raiders take a long preseason trip every two years, and they've also been to Italy, Japan and Bloomington, Ind., for tournaments in recent years.
Iolani dropped from No. 41 to No. 49 in the Fab 50 national rankings last week.
Sabers have new coaches: Co-coaches Chameka Curran and David Perreira have taken over the reins of the Campbell softball team this season after the departure of Wayne Nagamine.
Curran and Perreira are Campbell alumni.
Curran played for the Sabers and then for Hawaii Pacific from 1994 to '97.
Perreira has experience as an assistant with the Campbell softball and baseball teams.
"I enjoy working with the girls," Curran said. "Coaching is a lot different than playing, but it's rewarding to see the kids come out and watch them improve."
Campbell athletic director Duane Izumi declined to comment on the reason Nagamine left.
Injury report: Roosevelt football coach Lester Parilla is getting some guff from his players during the offseason.
Parrilla took a few days off from school after he suffered a a broken foot and the footballers are kidding him about not being tough enough to "play" through the pain.
