Coast Guard to fetch drifting weather buoy

Weather buoy 51001, one of four positioned around the islands, is still transmitting data after breaking its mooring Friday and drifting 23 miles southeast of the mooring, the National Weather Service reports.

The Coast Guard cutter KUKUI is to leave Friday to retrieve the $160,000 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration buoy.

The buoy, shaped like a ship, is anchored to the ocean bottom in water about 10,683 feet deep. It weighs 19,250 pounds.

The four buoys measure wind speed and direction, sea surface and air temperature, sea level pressure, wave height and wave energy at different frequencies. The forecast office uses the data for high surf forecasts.

Campbell was arrested and charged Friday on Maui, where he was vacationing. His mug shots were published across Canada and in Hawaii, and entrepreneurs have started marketing T-shirts, coffee mugs and tote bags emblazoned with his arrest pictures.

Campbell said he is a social drinker but that he will seek professional advice to determine whether he has an alcohol problem. "I will not drink again," he said.

Corrections and clarifications

>> In the list of state legislators on Page A6 yesterday, Rep. Ezra Kanoho's photograph was mistakenly run in place of Rep. Sol P. Kaho'ohalahala's. Also in early editions, former Rep. Joe Gomes' photograph was mistakenly run in place of Rep. Tommy Waters'. Kaho'ohalahala's and Waters' photos are shown here. Also, in the list, Robert Bunda is in his third year as Senate president, and Calvin Say is in his fifth year as House speaker. Their leadership tenures were incorrectly reported.

>> Former state Sen. Whitney Anderson says he did not receive results from political polls commissioned by the Bishop Estate (now Kamehameha Schools) in the early 1990s. A story on Page A1 Friday did not say specifically that Anderson had received poll results but may have left the impression that he did.

Forestry joins effort to contain Maui blaze

WAILUKU >> State forestry workers were joining county firefighters this morning to fight an expanding blaze close to a reserve with endangered plants and animals in West Maui.

The fire had been contained after it burned about 25 acres of brush and eucalyptus forest on state land above Lahainaluna High School, acting Assistant Fire Chief Mark Paranada said.

The fire flared up and expanded, and additional fire-fighting personnel were being called today, fire officials said.

"We need to make sure this fire stops moving," said Glenn Shishido, the incident commander for the state forestry division.

Shishido said nine state workers were fighting the fire mauka of Lahainaluna High School and a crew of about 10 workers will be called in to assist them.

Paranada said the fire was in a relatively inaccessible area and would be dangerous to fight at night.

The fire was located at approximately the 1,700-foot elevation and the native reserve is located at about the 2,000-foot level.

Fire officials were called at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday about the brush blaze and had contained the fire by 1 a.m. yesterday, after it had burned about 12 acres of land. But the fire restarted and began moving up the mountain.

Paranada said three helicopters were dropping water from containers yesterday evening. Another helicopter was to join in the firefighting effort today.
