Only those who have email
have the powerNEARLY ALL THE winner's in the "People's Choice" awards show used the cliche about the award being particularly meaningful because it came from "the people." To be specific, folks with computers who filed votes. Other shows, like the Oscars, have awards that are voted by the peers of the nominees, and those winners are happy about that fact. Where there are journalist organizations which host competitions for funniest column, for example, the writer has to submit or have his work submitted to be considered. Not having ever done that, I'll have to side with the "People's Choice" concept, based on two emails received yesterday. One, from I. Nelson, stated, "I always look forward to Sunday when I can read your wonderful column and recall many happy memories..." Another came in from Patty Dumphy Benson, who wrote, "Just wanted to tell you that Al and Jean Dumphy that your wrote about in the 1970 article celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in October at their granddaughter Mia Parlier's wedding in St. Louis. They are still happy and living in Concord, Calif." Dumphy, you may recall, was a Spencecliff exec here in the restaurant chain's golden years ...
IT'S always a pleasure to get holiday greetings from Paul & Kay Henderson at the loveliest of old English Country Inn's, Gidleigh Park, in Devon. I've had the good fortune to stay at Gidleigh Park, located in a National Park, on two occasions. The Henderson's card, with a lovely photo, stated that the two will celebrate their 25th anniversary at Gidleigh Park in March. Paul spent a lot of time in Hawaii and even attended Punahou before he married and moved to England. Brother Bill Henderson still lives here ...
No longer "Girls"
WHILE it may seem impolite to mention it, the famous Halekulani Girls, who'll be saluted in an hour-long "Music of Hawaii" program on KIPO Sunday at 3 p.m. have passed the point when they were "girls" and are now fully fledged women. The three -- Alice Friedlund, Linda Dela Cruz and Sybil Andrews -- can be heard on 17 songs chosen from several of their 1960s records by "Music of Hawaii" hosts Keith & Carmen Haugen, many from out-of-print recordings ...THE Seattle Post-Intelligencer says the employment situation of KIRO newswoman Susan Hutchison, who was formerly on air in Hawaii, is up in the air. Her anchoring duties have been reduced considerably of late, not great timing since her husband, Andy, is a colonel in the Maine Corps Reserve and on Sunday went on active duty ...
Last Will Testimonial
DURING each NFL playoff game there was a tribute to Boston Globe sportswriter Will McDonough, who died last week at 67. McDonough was also widely known for his TV commentary. He'll miss this year's Super Bowl, of course. He attended every one since the first in 1967. He took an instant liking to "All World" tight end Russ Francis, and helped the former Kailua High quarterback handle both the press and superstardom. He was a frequent guest on Ron Jacobs and his "Whodaguy" show on KKUA ...
