Judy Jensen makes strides
in Arizona

Former ISLE resident Judy Jensen, now living in Scottsdale, Ariz., sold former 49er star quarterback Steve Young and his wife, Barb, a luxury home in Scottsdale. Judy had a clear field in the sale because Barb is her niece. The Youngs were married on the Big Island three years ago. Judy ran the Monaco marathon in November with former islanders Daryn and Paul Gabriel to help raise funds for Child Help USA. She said the race went along the beachfronts of Monaco, France and Italy and that health drinks and snacks were provided for runners at stations in Monaco and France. But in Italy, wine and salami sandwiches were offered. Judy, who was married to entertainer Dick Jensen, went to see Don Ho when he recently performed at an Indian casino in Phoenix. She said the showroom was filled with 2,000 people, many wearing aloha attire. Although the casino books big names, Don is the only one to sell it out two nights in a row ...

'Chicago' is hot and jazzy

Having seen and enjoyed "Chicago" on Broadway, I was anxious to see the movie version of the musical. I was not disappointed. It's a big, jazzy, sexy, spectacle set in tough old Chicago. Stars Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere are not known for their singing and dancing but they came through as if they had been doing it all their lives. It's an entertaining two hours with good laughs ... Glen Larson, who created "Magnum, P.I." and other series, dropped in to sing with his buddy Audy Kimura at Hy's twice in recent days. Impresario Tom Moffatt was with Glen on one night. As he does on his many visits, Glen, who once sang with the Four Preps and wrote "26 Miles Across the Sea," insisted that Audy sing "Lovers and Friends," which Audy wrote ...

More HOT stuff

The Hawaii Opera Theatre's new exec director is George Sinclair, who held the same position with the Sacramento Opera. Henry Akina remains as general and artistic director, overseeing the artistic leadership of the opera company. This year's HOT season opens with "Eugene Onegin" Jan. 31, Feb. 2 and 4, followed by "The Magic Flute" Feb. 14, 16 and 18, and winds up with "La Boheme" Feb. 28, March 2, 4 and 6 ... Allen Cole and Bridget Kelly have the juicy roles of Randle McMurphy and Nurse Ratched in Diamond Head Theatre's production of "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" playing Jan. 31-Feb. 16 ... Penny Kelii's last name was misspelled here last week ...

Retired Star-Bulletin chief photographer Warren Roll, now living in Port Ludlow, Wash., sent friends here the sad word that his wife, Mollie, died Dec.12. Mollie's dad was Adm. Turner Joy. He was the chief U.N. negotiator in the Korean War peace talks. A destroyer was named after him. Mollie was a youngster visiting the home of an admiral on Ford Island near where the battleship Arizona was docked on Dec. 7, 1941, when all hell broke loose. As the Japanese attacked, she and other women and children were hustled downstairs to safety into a conrete bunker that held scores of people. Thanks to retired Bulletin reporter Lyle Nelson for the Navy background ...
