On the Scene
WHO NEEDS A PARTNER?: Michelle Winchester was hanging out with her mother and some friends but found the music so inviting that she hit the dance floor solo as things were starting to heat up at Scruples on Saturday. Scruples' well-known president/general manager Fred Piluso said that 2002 was the best year overall in the club's history. Piluso is planning a big event to celebrate Scruples' 20th anniversary in April -- expect plenty of celebrities.
"CROONIN' AT THE MOON": Zanuck Kapala Lindsey showed off his new no-body guitar during his early evening solo set at Brew Moon on Monday (yes, he is sticking his hands through the "body" of the instrument). Lindsey features pop hits and a few originals each Monday from 7 to 10 p.m.
"SPOOKY" GOES LATIN: Noel Okimoto, center, introduced the Noel Okimoto Latin Jazz Band at Kapono's on Monday. It was the second public performance for the group, from left, Todd Smith (electric bass), Rodney Perez (percussion), Adam Baran (drums) and Jim Howard (electric keyboards). Okimoto and Perez traded off on congas and timbales during one number, but the biggest surprise of the night was "Spooky," rearranged Latin-style with Okimoto playing vibes.
