Isle communicators
prepare to laud
their own work

On any given day, members of the Hawaii chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators pitch stories about clients to the news media, or prepare publications and other communications to get the word out about the companies where they work.

Now it's time for them to pitch their own 2002 work to panels of mainland judges.

IABC Hawaii is calling for entries for its annual Ilima Awards program, open to members and nonmembers, professionals and students. Commercial works, such as publications or videos sold to the public, are ineligible, according to the rules.

Awards of excellence and merit will be presented April 3 in several categories including writing, publication design, photography/illustration, internal and external publications, special print communications, video/multimedia/electronic program, communication program and marketing communication.

For just the second year, IABC Hawaii will present a lifetime achievement award. The group's board is to meet today to review nominees and choose an honoree.

Last year the chapter's first Lifetime Achievement award was given to Arnold Kishi, cited for a career of communication spanning roles in the news media, with the East-West Center, the governor's office and four decades of service with the organization. IABC Hawaii credited Kishi with being a key player in implementing e-government in Hawaii, bringing government services to businesses and the public online.

"More people know about (the Ilima Awards program) now and we're trying to build on it," said Nicola Farris, IABC Hawaii vice president for special awards. Farris is a freelance producer and owner of Whistler Productions.

Entries cost $15 for students, $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers; the deadline is 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4 and no late entries will be accepted. Entry forms are to be available at www.iabchawaii.com.
