The year 2002 marked the passing of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, an outspoken Hawaii Democrat.

Mink died Sept. 28 at Straub Clinic & Hospital about a month after being admitted for viral pneumonia brought on by chickenpox. She was still hospitalized when she won her primary election, and then won the general election posthumously.

Mink served a total of 24 years in Hawaii before her death at age 72.

>> Francis S. Takemoto, the first American of Japanese ancestry to achieve the rank of general.
>> James Grant Benton, founding member of the Booga Booga comedy group.
>> Arthur K. Trask, patriarch of a politically active family.
>> The Rev. Harry Shigeo Komuro, a longtime leader of the Methodist Church in Hawaii.
>> Former state Rep. and Honolulu City Councilman Rudy Pacarro.
>> Former state Rep. Minoru "Gabby" Inaba.
>> Former state Sen. John Hulten.
>> Maui County Council Chairman Patrick Kawano.
>> Retired Adm. Robert L.J. Long, former commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command.
>> Myron "Pinky" Thompson, longtime Bishop Estate Trustee and founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
>> Helen Matthew Robinson, owner of the private Niihau Island and Niihau Ranch.
>> Author, microbiologist and medical historian O.A. "Ozzie" Bushnell.
>> Native Hawaiian writer and editor Darlaine Mahealani Dudoit.
>> Veteran concert promoter Ken Rosene.
>> Kam Fong Chun, who played detective Chin Ho Kelly on the television series "Hawaii Five-0."
>> Yun Tau Chee, the first Miss Hawaii and the first Asian contestant in the Miss America pageant.
