After the clock rolled to double zeroes, after he touched the trophy that tormented him for nearly three years, and after he addressed the throng of cameras and tape recorders, Bobby George locked eyes with his head coach as they walked up Aloha Stadium's north tunnel following St. Louis' victory over Castle in the state championship game.

"The tears of joy and relief he had and the hug he gave me is what coaching is all about," St. Louis football coach Delbert Tengan said.

George, the Crusaders' quarterback for the better part of three seasons, and the rest of St. Louis' senior class finally silenced the doubters by reclaiming the state championship after falling short the previous two years.

For their perseverance as much as their production, George and teammate Wilson Afoa are the Star-Bulletin's all-state offensive and defensive players of the year.

The All-State team was selected by the Star-Bulletin's staff based on consultation with coaches around the state.

George overcame injuries and doubts about his leadership to guide the Crusaders back to the prep football summit. Afoa, overshadowed by more prominent teammates earlier in his career, emerged as a dominant force on the defensive line for St. Louis.

Although Tengan led St. Louis to the state championship, his counterpart in the title game is this year's all-state coach of the year. Castle's Nelson Maeda used his team's lack of size as motivation rather than as an excuse and led the Knights to the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship and a spot in the state title game.

"What the team had individually may not measure up to other teams, but collectively we were able to overcome other teams just because we played together," Maeda said. "And that was extremely gratifying."

For George, the championship provided redemption after enduring losses to Kahuku in the state title game his sophomore and junior seasons.

The third time was the charm for St. Louis quarterback Bobby George, who finally won a state title game in his senior year.

His senior year started on a rocky note as the Crusaders lost to nationally top-ranked De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in the HHSAAFirst Hawaiian Bank Football Classic and suffered a bigger fall the following week, losing to Kamehameha 41-20. He left that game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.

George was back on the field for St. Louis' next game and led the Crusaders on a nine-game winning streak that ended with a 34-15 win over Castle in the state title contest.

George completed 60 percent of his throws and finished the season with 2,274 passing yards and 19 touchdowns.

"Everybody had questioned if he had what it takes to take St. Louis to the next level," Tengan said. "A lot of people questioned his toughness the past two years. ... But he proved to everybody how tough he was. I think he grew up. As a quarterback, especially here at St. Louis, you need to step up and play through injuries and show your toughness.

"He was under tremendous pressure, and for him to overcome that -- just do what he needed to do to get us to where we finished this year -- says a lot in itself about Bobby's character."

George is joined in the first-team backfield by teammate B.J. Batts and Campbell's Mapa Malupo.

Batts carried the ball 135 times for 981 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. His speed in the open field also made him one of the state's most dangerous kick returners.

Malupo was the workhorse of the OIA's top rushing offense. He gained 960 yards on 133 carries, averaging more than 137 yards per game.

Batts and Malupo got the nod over a host of worthy backs, including record-setting runners in Hawaii Prep's Brad Lau and Waimea's Jordon Dizon. St. Louis' Justin Cabansag, Iolani's Raynold Stowers and Kailua's Nathan Leaver also rated first-team consideration.

Kamehameha's Keoni Ruth, McKinley's Isaiah Iaea and St. Louis' Shane Butcher make up the receiver corps.

Ruth was one of Kamehameha's most reliable weapons and ended his season by catching 11 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns against St. Louis in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship game.

Iaea teamed with second-team quarterback Abel Werner on 64 passes for 1,267 yards and 11 touchdowns as the Tigers advanced to the state semifinals.

Butcher finished with 865 yards and seven touchdowns. His play helped the Crusaders weather a midseason stretch in which 2001 all-state receiver Jason Rivers was sidelined with an injury and several young slotbacks were learning their roles in the offense.

A strong year for offensive linemen is evident in the selection of six to the first team.

Kailua's Pat So'oalo and Xavier Ho'olulu were devastating blockers for the Surfriders. Farrington center Michael Lafaele anchored the Governors' drive to the state tournament. St. Louis' Jeremy Inferrera and Kamehameha's R.J. Willing were two of the top linemen in the ILH, and McKinley's Taase Jennings combined size and explosiveness to lead the Tigers to their first state tournament appearance.

Farrington's Matt Bell was a threat in virtually every phase of the game. In a state tournament game against St. Louis, the OIA East Red Conference's leading rusher racked up 163 total yards and caught three touchdown passes.

Afoa entered the season as St. Louis' "other" defensive end. All-state teammate Tolifili Liufau began the year as the focal point for the Crusader defense, but it wasn't long before opposing coaches and college recruiters were taking notice of Afoa.

"All the films were requested for (Liufau) and after we sent them out they called and asked us, 'Who's No. 87?' " Tengan said.

Afoa was a regular in opposing backfields, logging 19 tackles for losses, including 6 1/2 sacks. When Liufau completed his eligibility after the Crusaders won their 17th consecutive ILH title, Afoa kicked into another gear for the state tournament.

"He's one of the quiet leaders on our team," Tengan said. "When we lost Liufau, our defense rallied around him. He always came up and made the big plays when we needed him."

Joining Liufau and Afoa on the defensive line are fierce tackling machines in Kailua's Vili Fonokalafi and McKinley junior Randy Faletoi.

Castle linebacker Cory Daniel was the leader of an aggressive Knights defense that sparked the team's postseason heroics. He is joined in the linebacker unit by St. Louis' Timo Paepule, Waimea's Gary Mata and Kamehameha's Kaeo Drummundo. Each represented the heart of his defensive unit.

Kahuku ended its season earlier than expected, but safety Viliami Nauahi had already established himself as one of the state's premier defensive backs.

Castle's Ikaika Ho was another all-purpose threat and played a large role in the Knights' schemes on both sides of the ball. Waimea's Tyson Fernandez came up big in the season's biggest games. His interception in the end zone sealed the Menehunes' win over Kailua in the state tournament.

St. Louis' kicker combination of Kaeo Adams and C.J. Santiago also earned all-state recognition. Adams provided reliable scoring while Santiago averaged more than 41 yards per kick.

Castle's Jared Suzui was the Knights' top receiver and provided big plays for a special teams unit that figured mightily in Castle's fortunes this season.

Few could have predicted that Castle's season would end with the Knights lining up opposite St. Louis with the state championship at stake. But Maeda and his staff instilled a belief in the players that they could overcome their opponent's size advantages with speed and grit.

The Knights went 4-3 in the OIA East Red Conference to qualify for the playoffs before embarking on a wild seven-game winning streak that took them to the OIA title and the state championship game.

Along the way, the Knights' remarkable run created an excitement that hadn't been seen in Kaneohe for a long time and provided memories that will last well beyond the winter.

"This is something that will stand out for a lifetime," Maeda said. "We may come across more talented teams in the future, but this is one team and one year that we'll never forget."
