It's almost New Year's, and that means it's time for mochi to get pounded to a delicious pulp. Here Tyler Ogoshi, 8, and his grandfather Kazumi Nakanishi tried their hand at the glutinous ritual held at Aiea Hongwanji Mission yesterday morning.

Kwanzaa was celebrated yesterday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts with a quilting workshop using fabric from Africa. Phyllis Nakasone, the leader of the workshop, sorted through the African fabric on hand. The African-American cultural holiday, conceived and developed by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, was first celebrated on Dec. 26, 1966.
