set at 12 sites Jan. 11Star-Bulletin staff
The state Department of Health is working with other state agencies, the counties and island business to offer the free service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the following locations:
Kailua Intermediate School; Kaiser High School; Kaneohe District Park; Kapalama Elementary School; Kapiolani Community college, the corner of 18th and Kilauea avenues; Kapolei Elementary School; Mililani Makaunulau Park; Polynesian Cultural Center; University of Hawaii at Manoa, Richardson School of Law; Waianae Comprehensive Health Center; Waimea Falls Park; and Waiau District Park.
The trees will be mulched for use in parks and other sites.
Only clean trees will be accepted for recycling. Trees that are flocked or contain foreign objects such as tinsel, nails and ornament clips will not be accepted. No wreaths will be accepted because of their wiring, which could harm the chippers.
Since there is only one day for drop-off, the city warns residents not to leave the trees at the collection sites before or after Jan. 11, as they will pose a serious fire hazard.
Other options for disposal of the trees include the city's curbside green waste recycling collection twice a month throughout the year in areas that receive automated refuse collection service.
All city Refuse Convenience Centers accept trees and green trimmings year round from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. For more information on curbside pick-up or the location of the nearest refuse center, call the city's Recycling Office at 692-5410.
For recorded tree-cycling information, on Oahu, call 521-2447; Big Island, 961-2676; Maui, 270-7874 or 270-7880; Lanai and Molokai, 888-991-4000; and Kauai, 241-6891.
