PATIENCE is a virtue if you want to be a photographer, says Ricky Oshima, a Hyatt Regency Waikiki chef who spends his free time behind the lens.

When Oshima took these firework pictures from Magic Island this summer, he set up his tripod and shot continously, crossing his fingers that a few shots would capture the brilliant artistry that lit the sky.

"I did lots of hoping," Oshima says with a laugh. "It was all by chance."

He fared well, as these photographs show. "My lucky shots," Oshima calls them.
