Crew member indicted for stabbing on ship

A federal grand jury indicted a 45-year-old Philippine national with assault with a deadly weapon yesterday for allegedly knifing a fellow crewman aboard an American longline fishing vessel on Dec. 20.

According to court documents filed with the indictment, Hercules Potoy Boctot admitted stabbing Rone Necesario aboard the vessel Pacific Horizon 143 miles east of Maui.

The U.S. Coast Guard transported Necesario, 30, also a Filipino national, to Maui Memorial Hospital.

When the ship docked Dec. 21 at Kapalama Basin in Honolulu at Pier 36, law enforcement personnel arrested Boctot.

According to an FBI agent's affidavit, Necesario asked Boctot to help him with some work. When Boctot refused and tried to provoke a fight, Necesario kicked him. Boctot then allegedly walked away and returned with a knife, stabbing Necesario on the right and left sides of his body.

Necesario managed to get to the bridge and informed the ship captain, who yelled at Boctot to drop the knife and had the crew lock him in the bathroom, the affidavit said.

Work was expected to be completed by early this morning.

Crews worked on the leak near Honokai Hale by the intersection of Laaloa Street and Farrington Highway, causing one town-bound lane on Farrington Highway to be closed.

The water board had requested residents use water for essential needs only.
