>> The Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii will be open from midnight Tuesday to accommodate visitors who wish to give thanks for past blessings and seek health and well-being in the New Year. The traditional Japanese New Year's blessing will continue to be given at the Shinto shrine at 215 N. Kukui St. through Wednesday evening. New ofuda and omamori -- amulets -- for the blessing and protection of businesses, homes and persons will be available for a nominal donation.
>> Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, at 1727 Pali Highway, will hold its annual Joya-E service at 11 p.m. Tuesday ending with the joyous ringing of the temple bell at midnight.
The Rev. Shigenori Makino and the Rev. Ryoso Toshima will speak at the year-end service.
The Shusho-E, New Year's Day, service will begin at 10 a.m., with Makino and Bishop Chikai Yosemori presiding. The temple will be open to visitors through the day.
