STAR-BULLETIN / 2001
If it's New Year's, it must be time for that popular Japanese good-luck decoration known as kadomatsu, made of pine boughs, bamboo stalks and plum tree sprigs, all wrapped in straw ropes. Contest for best kadomatsu
Star-Bulletin staff
All you'll need are the basic bamboo and pine to put together your own kadomatsu for a contest being held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Ward Warehouse amphitheater stage as a fund-raiser to benefit the TEMARI Center for Asian & Pacific Arts.
Winners will be chosen in several categories, including "Best Traditional," "Best Contemporary," "Most Innovative" and more. Patrons will observe the making of the Grand Kadomatsu and the new Plantation Kadomatsu, both designed to bring good luck in 2003.
There will also be taiko drumming, Asian and Pacific folk dances, mochi pounding and other craft demonstrations.
Admission is free. Call 735-1860 for details.
