Star-Bulletin staffThe 13,025-square-foot East Honolulu Police Station would replace 91 park-and-ride stalls that the city has deemed underused. The land fronts the marina.
The station, which will consist of two attached buildings, will be staffed by 170 officers and 10 administrative and clerical employees.
Hawaii Kai, built from wetlands in the 1950s and 1960s, has risen to a population of more than 27,000 people.
The city has not yet selected a contractor because bids came in too high, said Ben Lee, city managing director.
Construction on the station is slated to start in the summer and wrap up in early 2005.
The deadline for comment on the city's draft environmental assessment is due Jan. 22. Comments should be addressed to the city Department of Design and Construction, 650 S. King St., Honolulu 96813.
