Coryn Tanaka and May Masaki, co-authors of "Making Ribbon Leis and Other Gifts of Aloha," are offering a free program for those who want to learn how to make ribbon leis.The two will demonstrate the art at 10 a.m. Monday at Wahiawa Public Library.
In case you're still puzzled about ways to twist those ribbons after the session, copies of the Bess Press book will be available for purchase.

Illustrators sought
The Hawaii chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is seeking picture-book illustration submissions for professional critique in conjunction with an upcoming conference.Entries will be critiqued by a professional in the field, and the best will be selected for critique by children's book illustrator and author G. Brian Karas. The critique program is part of SCBWI-Hawaii's winter conference, set for Feb. 22. Guidelines are as follows:
>> Submit work that relates to the field of picture-book publishing. For example, do not submit basic still-life or figure drawing exercises.Each submission must be accompanied by a $30 critique fee ($25 for members). Make checks payable to SCBWI-Hawaii. Include a separate self-addressed, stamped envelope for each submission. Send to: SCBWI Portfolio Critique, 2084 Young St., Suite E, Honolulu 96826. Must be postmarked by Jan. 24. Call 779-5910.
>> Send laser prints, inkjet prints, photos, tear sheets, etc.; no slides.
>> Send nonreturnable copies. No original artwork.
>> Send no more than 15 images OR a single-book dummy with associated art.
Cookies with heart
Kakaako Kitchen is seeking original recipes for its Valentine's Day "Cookies with Heart" contest.Recipes will be accepted at the restaurant through Jan. 24. Finalists will need to present a baker's dozen of their cookies for a taste-off at 11 a.m. Feb. 1. Cookies will be judged on presentation, taste, texture and simplicity of the recipe.
The creator of the winning concoction will receive a plate lunch of their choice from Kakaako Kitchen. The top cookie will be a featured dessert item at Kakaako Kitchen and named after its creator. Other prizes will include a Kakaako Kitchen gift basket and gift certificates from chef Russell Siu's other eatery, 3660 on the Rise.
Kakaako Kitchen will bake and donate 12 dozen batches of the winning cookie to Queen's Hospital as a special Valentine's Day treat. Call 596-7488.
