Star-Bulletin

Gov. Linda Lingle appointed today Dr. Chiyome Leinaala Fukino as the new director of the state Department of Health and Jade K. Kadohiro, who has a doctorate in public health, as deputy health director.

Lingle said both women have the depth of experience and knowledge in the medical field to carry out the duties of ensuring the health of Hawaii’s people.

Fukino has practiced internal medicine since 1985 and serves part-time on the staff at Leahi Hospital. She has broad experience working with Hawaii’s health care facilities and served as medical director of the Queen’s Physician Group from 1996 to 1999.

Much of her professional work and research has focused on the health of native Hawaiians. Kadohiro has taught at the University of Hawaii School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene since 1991, where her research focused on diabetes among youths. She was a nurse investigator for the Honolulu Heart Program, and has held a number of positions within the health department.
