Viloria to fight for
another title on
ESPN2 in January

The holiday season might go by faster for Waipahu boxer Brian Viloria than it does for most people.

Viloria, 22, signed to fight Alejandro Moreno of Mexico Jan. 10 on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. And he can't wait.

"He's upset with his performance (against Alberto Rossell). He knows it was lackluster," Team Viloria manager Gary Gittelsohn said. "He really wants a chance to make everything right again."

Viloria beat Rossell on Nov. 24 by majority decision, but was disappointed with his performance. In their previous meeting, Viloria failed to knock Rossell out despite having him on the ropes. That bout was ruled a no-contest because of a head-butt.

Viloria's NABF title will be on the line against Moreno, as will the vacant USBA title.

"It gives him a chance to collect another piece of hardware," Gittelsohn said. "And at the same time use the kinds of skills we know he has."

Moreno (19-10-1, 10 KOs) was hand-picked by Gittelsohn because he can do the same kinds of things that Viloria had trouble with in Rossell the second time. Moreno has been knocked out only once in his 30 fights and chooses his spots to mix it up. Viloria's task will be to catch up to him, something Gittelsohn and trainer Freddie Roach believe he will need to learn.

"The book is still being written on Brian," Gittelsohn said. "I think everyone knows that there is no one in the 112-pound class who can take Brian's power, so they avoid it. Moreno will certainly not cooperate."

UH signs with KKEA for 2 more years

Hawaii extended its broadcast contract with KKEA 1420 AM radio for two years, through the 2004-05 academic year, athletic director Herman Frazier said yesterday.

The station carried more than 140 Hawaii sports events last year.
