National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist Sarah Scherer showed one of the 100 bright orange "drift cards" that she and other scientists dropped in the ocean a mile off Kalaeloa yesterday. Anyone who finds a card on the shore is asked to call the number printed on it, to help scientists study the direction of ocean currents off Oahu. Cards will be dropped once a month for a year and their drift patterns will be plotted on a NOAA Web site: response.restoration.noaa.gov/driftcard/driftFAQ.html.
