Smoke smell returns
HAL jet to Portland

Staff and wire reports

A Hawaiian Airlines plane landed safely this morning at Portland International Airport after passengers smelled smoke in the cockpit, an airport official said.

The DC-10 was headed to Honolulu but had to returned to Portland about 45 minutes after takeoff, said Steve Johnson, airport spokesman.

About 285 people were on board, said Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Keoni Wagner.

No one was injured and it wasn't immediately clear what caused the smoky smell.

Maintenance crews were inspecting the aircraft and hoped to have it ready to fly by this afternoon, Wagner said. Passengers were told to return to the airport by 1 p.m. Portland time.

Other DC-10s have had similar incidents, Wagner said, and they were caused by oil residues in the air conditioning system.

"Hopefully, we will find that this wasn't anything more," he said.
