It's narcissus season

"Mr. Narcissus" is back. Architect Gilman Hu, who annually hosts workshops on the ancient practice of cultivating and carving narcissus for Chinese New Year celebrations, returns to the Honolulu Academy of Arts for classes at the Academy Art Center beginning Jan. 4.

Beginning and advanced students will learn the art of upright and crab-claw narcissus culture in preparation for the lunar new year on Feb. 1.

Classes will run four consecutive Saturdays. Morning sessions will run 8:30 to 11 a.m., and afternoon sessions from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Both classes will accommodate all skill levels, with two to three instructors per class. Fees are $35 for new students and $25 for returning students.

Narcissus cultivation takes 14 to 17 days. Growers use special tools to scar the bulb, causing it to sprout leaves that curl into dramatic sculptural forms.

The workshops are being held in conjunction with the annual Narcissus Exhibition slated for Feb. 8 and 9 in the Academy of Arts courtyards. This year's display will also feature bonsai plants and demonstrations.

To register for the narcissus classes, call 532-8742.
