back at former firefighting jobQuestion: What ever happened to Kala'i Miller, the Honolulu firefighter who appeared in the television series "Baywatch Hawaii"?
Answer: Miller, 30, who took leave from the Honolulu Fire Department to study acting and pursue acting projects in Los Angeles, has returned to his old job.
Miller returned to Oahu about two years ago and is working full time as a firefighter at the Kalihi Kai Fire Station. But he also is pursuing television projects and will be returning to the small screen as host of "The Last Resort," a reality series premiering Jan. 20 on ABC television.
The show explores troubled relationships and is being filmed at the Kona Village Resort on the Big Island. It will feature nine couples as they try to resolve their differences and decide whether they want to stay together.
Unlike reality shows such as "Temptation Island" and "Survivor," Miller said his show "encourages and shows the best in people," instead of showing the worst in participants.
"We're simply trying to help people find the truth in their relationships," he said.
Though he enjoys working in the television industry, Miller stressed firefighting is his priority.
"Being able to go out there and to have the ability to help people in need ... it feels good."
Miller is a 1990 graduate of Iolani School and has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of San Diego. He lives in Kahaluu with his sister.
Miller said he had no intentions to become an actor and was merely tagging along with a friend who was trying out for a part on "Baywatch Hawaii." While he was waiting for his friend, an assistant for the show asked him to try out also, and Miller was added to the cast.
He appeared in eight episodes of "Baywatch Hawaii" before the series was canceled last year. His television credits also includes co-hosting the talent show "From Hawaii ... Destination Stardom."
Miller said he considers himself lucky to live in Hawaii and to be able to pursue careers in both firefighting and television.
"I've been very fortunate," he said. "I'm totally living a stoked life."
