5 from Hawaii still alive
in surfing Women's Pro

From staff and wire reports

Leilani Gruyde joined four other surfers from Hawaii yesterday in the third round of the Turtle Bay Resort Women's Pro.

Rochelle Ballard, Megan Abubo, Keala Kennelly and Melanie Bartels had byes into Round Three of the Women's Pro, the second leg of the women's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

Four-time world champion Layne Beachley of Australia also begins competition today, surf permitting.

The surf was rough, and big, yesterday, and Australia's Dara Penfold had the day's highest scores -- averaging a near-perfect final score of 9.83 in the opening round.

"I took off way on the outside on that one," Penfold said. "I took off in the whitewater and then rode it through to the inside."

Gruyde finished second in her heat in Round Two with a 9.67, behind Claire Bevilacqua of Australia (15.0).

Gruyde will be in a heat with Beachley today. Kennelly and Bartels are paired in the same heat, also.
