Singing for their
weekend stage debuts

THE SOPRANOS are going to church? No, we're not talking about the New Jersey mob family led by Tony Soprano on HBO, but a couple of Punahou students making their first appearances on stage. Justin Chun and Scott Wong take turns playing the lead role in "Amahl and the Night Visitors," the holiday classic opera written for children. The show will be performed Saturday and Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu. Tickets are $10, half-price for those under 18 ...

WHILE I doubt sultry Sharon Stone is a soprano -- she's pretty low register in such films as "Basic Instinct" and "Sliver" -- Stone is no shy violet when ordering lunch, as she's done a number of times at Hula Grill on Maui. She's married to San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein, whose toe was rendered asunder when Stone coaxed him to take off his shoes and venture into the Komodo Dragon enclosure in the S.F. Zoo. One has to wonder if Bronstein saw the chop job The New York Times ran on his paper the other day. There's some truth to the feeling that the Chron hasn't been the same since Mr. San Francisco, Herb Caen, died ...

More S.F. news

WITH apologies to London writer Sheridan Morley, who wrote a book about his famous actor dad, Robert Morley, called "Robert My Father," familiar S.F. figure Johnny Weissmuller Jr. is holding a book signing Sunday at the Washington Square Bar & Grill called "Tarzan My Father," which no doubt has Hawaiian references in it, particularly John Sr.'s friendship and competition with Duke Kahanamoku ... Meanwhile, John Conover, G.M. of S.F.'s famed Plumpjack Winery, is in Honolulu this week promoting the winery's commitment to bottling premium wines in screwtop bottles. Plumpjack, both the winery and the restaurant and wine shop bearing the name, is co-owned by S.F. Supervisor Gavin Newsome, rumored to be high on the list of possible future mayors once Willie Brown steps down as the law rules he must ...

THE bell-ringing folks of the Salvation Army have lined up a number of TV newscasters to ring bells at Windward Mall during the three weekends before Christmas. Helping to keep the century-old tradition of bell ringing over red kettles as a fund-raising tool of the season will be Ramsay Wharton of KHON on Sunday, and the following week by Jill Kuramoto (KITV), Manolo Morales (KHON) and the KHNL trio of Jodi Leong, Howard Dashefsky and Lyle Galdeira on the following Saturday and Louise Kim McCoy on the 15th. Lined up thus far for Dec. 21 are Stacy Loe and Britt Riedl of KGMB and cookie man Wally Amos ...

Tasty Tango

FOR those who missed the ultra-sensuous "Forever Tango" when it played here a couple of years ago, you have another chance. This show will be performed six times from Dec. 26 to 29 at the Hawaii Theatre. It features an all-Argentine cast of 35, including an 11-piece orchestra and some of the sultriest and sexiest dancers you're ever likely to see. Take the wife or girlfriend -- you won't be sorry ...
