After laying dormant for 22 years, the Hawaii Baptist Academy boys soccer program is back and the Eagles are off to a flying start.

HBA last fielded a boys soccer team in the 1979-80 season, sending its players to the Pac-Five program through last season. HBA athletic director Deren Oshiro said there had been rumblings among team parents about forming a separate team. When he sent out a letter to gauge interest he found unanimous support to create a boys program.

"They liked the idea of building up school pride and playing for the school," Oshiro said.

Twenty players showed up for the team and Rob Czlonka, a teacher at HBA, signed on to coach. The team's conditioning included jogging from its practice field at Makiki District Park back to the school's campus in Nuuanu Valley.

The work paid off as the Eagles have enjoyed success during their preseason schedule.

Andrew Kurata scored three goals in a 7-1 win over Kailua last Tuesday and Jon Taoka had three goals in four matches in the Kamehameha Classic. The Eagles finished 3-0-1 in the tournament with a win over Roosevelt, two over Kalani and a tie with Kamehameha, last year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and state runner-up.

HBA's girls soccer players continue to play for Pac-Five. HBA has 10 players on the Wolfpack roster this season. Oshiro said there was some support for HBA to field its own girls team, but not enough to warrant making a change this year.

"(Pac-Five) has experienced some success and they liked that they get to meet kids from other schools," Oshiro said.

The ILH season begins Dec. 11. The Oahu Interscholastic Association season kicks off Dec. 13.

Kaiser seeks baseball coach: The Kaiser athletic department is accepting applications from those interested in taking over as the school's varsity baseball coach.

Resumes should be sent to Kaiser High School, 511 Lunalilo Home Rd., Honolulu, HI 96825, Attn: Athletic Director. Phone inquiries will not be accepted. The deadline to apply is Dec. 10.

First pitch: The ILH softball season begins today with four games, including a matchup of last year's top two teams in the league.

Defending ILH and state champion Kamehameha opens with a showdown against Iolani at the Raiders' field. The Warriors went 17-0 last season to claim both the league and state championships. Iolani finished 14-3 and won the state tournament's consolation title.

In today's other games, Sacred Hearts meets Punahou at Crane Park, University plays Maryknoll at Ala Wai Field and Hawaii Baptist/St. Andrews/St. Francis faces La Pietra at Kamamalu field. All games start at 3:45 p.m.

The OIA season begins Dec. 18. Mililani has won the last three OIA championships. Kailua will also be a contender after advancing to last year's state title game.

Football broadcasts: Friday's final of the Chevron State Football Championship between Castle and St. Louis will be broadcast live on radio and on a two-day delay on television.

The Champions in Paradise Radio Network will carry the game live on K108 AM 1080 starting with the pregame show at 7 p.m. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:35.

Hawaii Sports Network will televise the game on Oceanic Cable channel 16 at 8 p.m. Dec. 8, with replays on Dec. 9 and 10.

Tickets for the game are $7 for adults and $5 for students kindergarten through 12th grade and are available at the Aloha Stadium ticket office. The parking lot opens at 5 p.m. Turnstiles open at 6.
