Philippine Air flight stops here after death

A Philippine Airlines flight from San Francisco to Manila was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Honolulu last night after one of its passengers died en route.

The 76-year-old man was discovered unresponsive in one of the aircraft's bathrooms. Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and a physician on board the flight pronounced him dead.

Family members said the man suffered from numerous medical ailments. The crew diverted PAL Flight 105 to Honolulu and touched down about 11:30 p.m. Officials from the Department of the Honolulu Medical Examiner retrieved the man's body and will perform an autopsy.

The man's family members remained on the aircraft and resumed their flight to Manila.

2 intended victims flee would-be robbers

Two sets of would-be robbers came away empty-handed when their intended victims fled early this morning, Honolulu police said.

In the first case, according to police, a man was driving on Kahakai Drive near the Hawaii Convention Center at 12:40 a.m. when he approached a vehicle stopped at a stop sign. The man told police three men wearing dark clothing, gloves and ski masks exited the vehicle and approached his car.

He said one of the masked men brandished a silver, semi-automatic handgun and demanded money. The man told police he shifted his car into reverse and stepped on the accelerator. The suspects got into their vehicle and fled.

In the second attempted robbery, police said, a 39-year-old man was using an automatic teller machine at the First Hawaiian Bank at 1580 Kapiolani Blvd. at 2:45 a.m. when a suspect approached him from behind, held the knife to him and demanded money.

But the man ran away and the suspect fled in a white sport utility vehicle driven by another male and with a female passenger.

The suspect is described as a man in his 30s, 5-feet-10 inches tall, 260 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police say they believe the two incidents were separate.
