Papaya seed dressings  rule

Two salad dressings from Pupukea Gardens in Haleiwa have been named winners in the national Scovie Awards, a competition that recognizes the best in spicy foods.

The company's Hawaii's Special Papaya Seed Dressings won second place in the condiments category for dressings -- these items don't have to be spicy, but should pair well with hot and spicy foods. Pupukea Garden's Papaya Seed Vinaigrette won third place.

More than 500 products were entered in the competition sponsored by Fiery-Foods and Barbecue Magazine.

The winners, announced last month, were in more than 60 categories, from hot sauces to prepared foods. First-place winner in the dressing category was Apple Canyon Orange Sesame Dressing & Marinade, made in Albuquerque, N.M. The overall grand-prize winner was a sweet sauce, Habanero Hula Jam, from Chile Jammin' Stuff, also in Albuquerque.

David Delventhal of Pupukea Gardens said he developed the dressings to complement the baby salad greens that are the company's primary product.

He's been test-marketing the dressings on the North Shore for four years and this year began distributing to stores in town.

The dressings, which Delventhal says work as marinades as well, are available at Native Books & Beautiful Things, Compleat Kitchen, Local to Da Max in Pearlridge, Days of Aloha in Kaimuki and at the North Shore outlets Tropical Farms and Taste of Paradise. New cookie

The pineapple-shaped shortbread cookies of Honolulu Cookie Co. have a new home at Ward Warehouse.

For four years, Keith Sung has sold the cookies from a storefront on Homerule Street as well as in gift stores. His second shop exposes the cookie to more foot-traffic, next to Child's Play.

The cookies come in pineapple, mango, lilikoi and Kona coffee flavors, as well as chocolate-dipped.
