Life in the NFL
Broncos continue slide
with OT lossWE'VE lost three of our last four games and it's taken away from our ability to control our own destiny.
But I don't think the losses, even the two three-point losses in a row, have put too much of a strain on us. It sucks to lose and we needed to win those games, but we're still in really good position at 7-5.
We need to pick up our game a little bit and we need to win the rest of our games to be in the playoffs and have a chance at making the Super Bowl.
It was a really close game and a good game against San Diego. Every play meant so much, and there were all those turnovers, blocked kicks and oohs and aahs over the big runs, the turnovers and the stops on fourth-and-one. With all those things happening, it made for a really exciting game.
I didn't see a lot of action because when I get in a lot is when it's third-and-long or when it's late in the game to close out certain situations. We didn't have a lot of third-and-longs, and at the end of the game this time we didn't need the formations where I'm involved. Instead, we went with a lot of two backs, two tight ends, one receiver sets.
I had one catch late in the game for a handful of yards and that was the only time the ball was thrown to me.
When Jason Elam went on for the field-goal attempt in overtime, it looked like it was going to be good at first and we were all feeling at our high point of the day. But then it went wide, and we all went "oooooh" and had that sinking feeling.
Then the Chargers got into field-goal range and our emotions kept dropping and dropping, culminating with their game-winning kick.
For the rest of our four regular-season games -- against the New York Jets, Kansas City, Oakland and Arizona -- we need to make more plays, more good plays on offense and get more turnovers on defense so we can blow some teams out.
Almost all of our games have been decided in the last quarter, and that may turn out to help us in the long run ... the fact that we have plenty of experience with close games.
All the coaches and players were really quiet after the game. Nobody got up and said anything, and that's no big deal because we need to do our talking on the field, anyway.
John Elway was such a big thing here in Denver, and there's some nice things up in the offices on display in honor of him. But I've never met him.
I often wonder how cool it would have been to play on his team, or with Joe Montana, or a lot of those other NFL legends.
To close out this week's diary, I'd like to give a tidbit of insight to what type of person I am off the field, and it won't be a shock to the people of Hawaii who know me -- I'm a very messy, sloppy person. My room is dirty and my locker is dirty.
