Mouse Davis joins Hawaiian Islanders
Darrel "Mouse" Davis, a forefather of the run-and-shoot offense, joined the Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2 as an assistant coach.Islanders head coach Cal Lee made the announcement last night on his weekly radio show.
"I'm really jacked about the whole thing as far as being in Hawaii is concerned," Davis told the Star-Bulletin in a phone interview. "We're solidifying potential places to stay and transportation and tying up those kinds of loose ends."
Davis, 70, recently stepped down as coach of the Arena Football League's Detroit Fury and planned to retire before getting the call from Lee.
"I wouldn't have taken the job if I didn't have control of the offense," Davis said.
Lee and Davis have developed a strong friendship throughout the years. Both Lee and University of Hawaii head coach June Jones are disciples of Davis' offensive philosophy.
"I have a great respect for him and what he's done," Lee said. "He's going to be an asset to our coaches and players. Getting a guy of Mouse's caliber -- for what he knows and what he can do -- is outstanding."
Davis was an assistant in the NFL with Detroit and Atlanta.
Lee also said he's retaining two assistants from last year's team -- Doug Semones and Darren Hernandez -- and that he's looking to add one more coach.
