Golden Maile Award winner returns

"Mr. & Mrs. Iyer," the Indian entry that won this year's Golden Maile Award for Best Feature at the Hawaii International Film Festival, will get two special screenings at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Signature Dole Cannery multiplex. Written and directed by Aparna Sen, it's a love story that addresses the religious and ethnic violence that haunts the South Asian country today.

Bust out the cameras

For the seventh year, Canon USA Hawaii is offering residents an opportunity to show off their photographic skills through the Canon Amateur Photo Contest.

The theme is "My Favorite Things in Hawaii," which covers the gamut of foods, scenery, family, cultural events, friends, or anything you can think of (keep it clean though).

The contest continues through Feb. 28, 2003. Photos submitted must be taken between Jan. 1, 2002, and Feb. 28, 2003.

The competition is open to all Hawaii residents, including active-duty Hawaii military personnel. Entries must be submitted as original photo prints. The photographer must be the owner of the photo copywright, which will be assigned to Canon USA, Inc.

First- to fifth-place winners will receive Canon cameras valued at $90 to $480. There will also be 25 honorable mentions. All 30 winners will have have their photos framed by Canon and the photos will be shown in an exhibition at the Canon Photo Gallery next April.

To enter the contest, pick up a form at photo shops, Canon, 210 Ward Ave. Suite 200; KGMB-TV at 1534 Kapiolani Boulevard; or Krater Hawaii at 900 Fort St., Suite 700.
