Hawaii hurting
after loss

The Warriors lose Fuata and Peters
for Saturday's game

Nate Jackson is out of the hospital

The Hawaii football team not only lost a game for the first time in nearly two months Saturday. The 21-16 defeat to Alabama was also costly on the injury front.

Starting offensive lineman Lui Fuata and standout safety Hyrum Peters are out for UH's (9-3) regular-season finale against San Diego State (4-8) on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

"It's a tough blow, but we did play most of the game without them," UH coach June Jones said.

Fuata suffered a tear to the lateral meniscus in his left knee on the Warriors' fifth offensive play of the game. He is scheduled to undergo surgery today.

It's possible Fuata, a senior, could play in the Dec. 25 ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl, UH sports information director Lois Manin said.

Peters has a partially torn PCL in his left knee, incurred in the second quarter. He is questionable for the bowl game.

Fuata, who started the first 11 games at center, was moved to left guard because of a knee injury to Shayne Kajioka, the starter there, in the preceding game.

Second-year freshman Derek Faavi started at center. When Fuata was hurt Saturday, Kajioka replaced him at left guard.

The Warriors allowed a season-high four sacks.

Peters was replaced by Leonard Peters (no relation). Leonard Peters was in on a career-high six tackles and recovered a fumble.

Leonard Peters began fall camp as the projected starter at strong safety. But he injured internal organs during a collision in two-a-days and saw sparse playing time until Saturday's game.

Hyrum Peters was in on six tackles before the injury, and is the Warriors' second leading tackler with 77 stops.

In other UH football news:

>> The Hawaii Bowl opponent picture has cleared up a little.

The Warriors' foe is supposed to come from Conference USA. The league has five bowl game tie-ins, and two C-USA teams accepted invitations over the weekend: Texas Christian (9-2) plays in the Liberty Bowl, and Louisville (7-5) agreed yesterday to go to the GMAC Bowl.

Some projections have Southern Miss (7-5) coming to Hawaii on Dec. 25.

But if Cincinnati (6-6) loses to East Carolina (4-7) on Saturday, C-USA won't have enough teams to fill its slots. In that case, Hawaii Bowl officials could conceivably get a team from outside the conference, perhaps a team with more name-recognition and fans who travel, like Washington (7-5) or Texas A&M (6-6).

Another possibility is that C-USA officials would make a push for South Florida (9-2), which joins the conference next year.

Tulane (7-5), C-USA's other eligible team, is expected to be invited to the New Orleans Bowl.

>> The Warriors fell out of the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 coaches poll. Hawaii, which was No. 24, is fifth among teams also receiving votes.

In the Associated Press media poll, UH fell from the third team in also receiving votes to ninth.

>> Jeremiah Cockheran's 207 yards receiving on nine catches is the sixth-best single-game pass-catching yardage performance in school history.

Cockheran, who played sparingly early in the season, moved into the Western Athletic Conference statistics as the 10th leading receiver with 57.3 yards per game.

>> UH remained third nationally in total offense with 491.7 yards per game and fell from seventh to ninth in scoring with 36.1 points.

>> Pisa Tinoisamoa's 19 tackles was four off the school record of 23 in a game set by Eddie Klaneski in 1996.

Tinoisamoa has 113 tackles this season, including 17 for loss, both team-leading figures.

>> Saturday's loss was Hawaii's first on national television since UH fell to Michigan on Nov. 28, 1998. Since, UH had beaten Oregon State, Fresno State (twice) and Brigham Young on ESPN before losing to Alabama on Saturday.

It was the Warriors' first home loss after nine wins, since falling to Boise State last year.
