Thanksgiving enjoyed
on land and seaHOPE this Thanksgiving was a good one for you. Mine was for the birds. To explain, my son prepared juicy cornish game hens on Wednesday, and it was traditional turkey at a friend's house yesterday. Even Wednesday night was devoted to birds as a ladyfriend and I went on board the Navatek -- my first time ever -- and the entertainment was by vocalist Nohelani Cypriano and two dancers.
Japanese tourists were coaxed on stage, where they tried to match the entertainers in shaking it, both Hawaiian and Tahitian style. Even more were brought up for disco dancing to the likes of "Y.M.C.A." It was a good way for them to work off the paté, salad, roast beef, lobster and chocolate cake dessert.
I inquired about a group of very tall young women and learned they comprised one of the women's basketball teams here for a tournament. Alabama had planned to take the cruise tonight until events of last weekend prompted team officials to keep the team at their hotel ...
One surprise: Playing guitar on the Navatek was Albert Maligmat, who, as "L'il Albert," was a long-time member of the Society of Seven ...
AND it's a good thing they have high ceilings at Leilani's on the Beach, since it was a popular spot for visiting basketballers here for the Maui Invitational ... Nice to see excellence rewarded. In addition to its regular schedule of performances for "Death of a Salesman," Hawaii Pacific University has added a performance for Dec. 4 ... And in response to ticket demands for Na Leo Pilimehana's appearance at the Honolulu Symphony pops concert Dec. 13 and 14, an additional show has been added for Dec. 15 ...
Rolling right along
ONE of the owners of Maharaja, Peter Maharaj, is back from a trip to New York and San Francisco, during which he took in four separate concerts by the Rolling Stones. He's pals with some of the Stones' musicians and they got him tickets to see the ageless rock 'n' roll legends at Madison Square Garden and in Giants Stadium. Maharaj reports that he had some memorable guests with him at the S.F. concerts which, from his description, sound like the last Stones performance at Aloha Stadium. With him were 49er quarterback Rich Garcia and ex-49er great Joe Montana, plus Oakland Q.B. Rich Mirer. A pity the Stones couldn't be booked back in Honolulu on this tour ...ABC Family TV has picked up "The Last Resort" for a total of 15 shows, all to be shot on the Big Island. The first five shows are already in the can and will air in January. Ten more shows will be filmed in December and January ...
Eyes like a cat
THE newly elected Governor of Guam, Felix Camacho, now has eyes like a cat. He flew in and got LASIK surgery form Dr. Tyrie Lee Jenkins, who provided him with monovision. That's where you see distance with one eye and up-close vision with the other. He rang up the doctor from Guam this week to say he's doing well, and Dr. Jenkins is getting a lot of referrals from Guamanians ...
