New wine-and-cheese bar
serves up series of tastings

Formaggio, a wine-and-cheese bar adjoining Fujioka's Wine Merchants, has opened with a series of wine tastings.

Owner Lyle Fujioka modeled Formaggio on the Italia enoteca, where wine is served alongside simple foods. "The sense of friendship, passion and community transforms the wine bar into a familiar neighborhood meeting place paralleling the evolution of our coffee shops," he says.

Full service at Formaggio (including Wednesday-night risotto tastings) won't begin until January, but Fujioka is easing into operations with private parties and tastings:

Penfolds and Rosemount 90+ Wine and Cheese Tasting: Taste wines rated at 90 points and above in Wine Spectator, with cheeses paired to match; Dec. 6.

Black Cats, Bachi and Bad Luck Friday the 13th Relief: Features 30 champagnes and sparkling wines, including Charles Heidsieck, Tattinger and Salon; Dec. 13.

Christmas Shopping Champagne Oasis: Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Billecart-Salmon and Dampiere are among featured wines; Dec. 20.

All tastings begin at 6 p.m. and cost $20. Call 739-9463.

Season of giving

The Hawaii Foodbank is making it easy to do a holiday good deed for the hungry.

The annual "Check Out Hunger" campaign allows shoppers to make cash donations to the food bank simply by picking up a coupon in the supermarket check-out line and handing it to the cashier.

The coupon will ring up as a $1 or $5 donation that will be added to your bill.

The campaign runs through January at Safeway, Times and Tamura's stores.

Foodland is running a similar campaign to provide holiday dinners for the needy.
