It ended like "The Jerry Springer Show" on steroids and the visiting athletic director isn't very happy. But neither coach holds a grudge after Hawaii's 20-19 victory over Cincinnati at Aloha Stadium on Saturday.

In fact, UH coach June Jones is rooting for Cincinnati to win its final two games and become bowl eligible.

He'd like to see a rematch -- of the game, not the postgame WWE-like antics.

After taking on 14th-ranked Alabama on Saturday and closing the regular season Dec. 7 against San Diego State, the Warriors are set to play in the inaugural Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 25.

The opponent is supposed to come from Conference USA, of which Cincinnati is a member. But UC coach Rick Minter said it's too early to think about Christmas in Hawaii.

"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Minter said. "We have a lot of work to do before we can be bowl eligible."

The Bearcats (5-6) have to win against Alabama-Birmingham and at East Carolina to qualify for the postseason.

Hawaii Bowl executive director Jim Donovan said it would be a tough decision to allow two teams that parted the way they did Saturday to spend a week together on Oahu and then play a football game.

"In general terms you don't like to have a rematch unless it's a conference championship. But it was a very good game. It's not completely ruled out," Donovan said. "They're a good football team. But taking into account everything that happened in the game and after, we'd have to think long and hard. After reading their AD's comments, I'm not sure they would want to come."

UC athletic director Bob Goin told the Associated Press that UH officials had no control of the situation.

"It was sad and disappointing," Goin said.

Jones said the postgame melee in which players from both teams were punched, kicked and bloodied would not discourage him from wanting to play the Bearcats again.

"That's not a factor. It would make for a good game. It's very possible they'll be here on Christmas Day. I hope we can play them again, actually," said Jones, whose team improved to 9-2 and moved up a notch to No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. "They came a long way and lost a tough game. Sometimes emotions get the better of you."

Jeremiah Cockheran and Shawn Withy-Allen conferred with coach June Jones after quarterback Tim Chang was sidelined for the second time with an injury.

Minter said the concept of taking a knee to run out the clock contributed to the brawl, and maybe some games should be stopped before the final seconds.

"I think their team probably felt fortunate to win and was showing elation, and ours was frustrated. They gracefully were trying to run out the clock, which I felt was classy," Minter said. "But there's too much dead time on the field in that case. Maybe there ought to be a concession rule. With 30 seconds to go, we were rolling up the white flag."

The helmet-throwing brawl involving players that ended with rowdy fans being pepper-sprayed by police went on for more than five minutes after the game. No major injuries resulted, except to the reputations of both programs.

"It was very unnecessary and unclassy for both schools," Minter said. "Both schools should be embarrassed."

Brian McCann of the UC sports information department said that only minor injuries resulted from the brawl.

"The thing we're disappointed with is the game management," McCann said. "So many boosters were permitted on the sideline it created a very hostile environment. It was unbelievable some of the things they were yelling."

The game was heated from early on, but a flashpoint was when Hawaii quarterback Tim Chang took a late hit with 2:39 remaining and was knocked out the game for the second time. UC linebacker Tyjuan Hagler was penalized for roughing the passer. But Hagler said, and TV replays indicated, that he fell on Chang unintentionally.

Jones saw the tape yesterday and said it didn't seem to be a cheap shot.

UH players didn't see it that way, especially at the time.

"Basically, they were sore losers," Hawaii tackle Wayne Hunter said. "They came into this game thinking they were going to win and didn't know what we were about. They're just sore losers, that's it."

X-rays of Chang's left knee, which was sprained earlier in the game, were negative Saturday and he underwent an MRI yesterday that showed minor damage that won't require surgery. Chang is listed as day-to-day and probable to play against Alabama.
