High-surf warning out for Oahu and Kauai
Weather forecasters issued a high-surf warning yesterday for the northwest-facing shores of Oahu and Kauai. Surf with wave fronts between 20 and 25 feet was expected to reach the islands by tonight.Surf along west-facing shores was expected to be 5 to 10 feet, also by tonight.
National Weather Service officials also issued a high-surf advisory for the northwest-facing shores of all other islands. The surf is expected to decrease by Wednesday and Thursday, according to weather officials.
Meeting to discuss Kalanianaole plans
Persons interested in the finalized plans for improvements to Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo are invited to the state Department of Transportation's informational meeting at 7 p.m. tomorrow.The improvements, which have been developed with the community's input, are proposed for Kalanianaole Highway between Olomana Golf Course and Waimanalo Beach Park.
The meeting will be held at the Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School Library conference room.
National Geographic profiles Hawaiians
Hawaiians immersed in traditions such as hula, celestial navigation, kapa making and taro farming are the subject of a National Geographic Magazine article and photographs in its December issue.The magazine previews the issue with an excerpt from the article "Hawaii: Preserving the Breath," by Paul Theroux, and photographs by Richard A. Cooke III, Adriel Heisey and Lynn Johnson on its Web site at www.nationalgeographic.com/ngm. It also offers downloadable maps of the islands.
Part-time Hawaii resident Theroux is the author of numerous travel and fiction books, among them "Hotel Honolulu" (2001), "Kowloon Tong" (1997) and "The Mosquito Coast" (1982).
Hawaii was last featured in the February 2001 National Geographic, which focused on the Waimanalo area as part of its ZIP code USA series, "96795: The Hawaiian's Hawaii."
Car's sale to benefit treatment program
Hina Mauka is selling a 1960 Mercedes-Benz to benefit Teen C.A.R.E., its state-funded school-based adolescent drug and alcohol treatment program.An anonymous donor gave the organization the car, which will be sold for its appraised value of $30,000 at Honda Windward in Kaneohe.
Hina Mauka provides prevention, treatment and recovery services to individuals, families and communities affected by alcoholism and chemical dependency.
Fumigation to close Bishop Museum hall
Bishop Museum will be closing Hawaiian Hall Dec. 16-19 for fumigation, which is done regularly as part of a preventive maintenance program.Hawaiian Hall was last fumigated on April 4, 1989. All other museum areas will remain open.
State offers hunter education classes
Hunter education classes will be offered by the state Department of Land & Natural Resources.Classes include instruction in firearm and archery safety, survival and first aid, wildlife identification and conservation, rules and regulations, game care and outdoor responsibility. Attendance for all sessions is required for certification.
The classes will be offered 5:45-10:15 p.m. Dec. 13 and Jan. 10, and 7:45 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 14 and Jan. 11. The sessions will be held at the Nimitz Business Center, 1130 N. Nimitz Hwy., 2nd Floor.

Injured motorcyclist in guarded condition
A 20-year-old man has been upgraded to guarded from critical condition at Queen's Medical Center following a head-on collision Thursday between a motorcycle and a car in Hauula.Police said the collision occurred about 10:55 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway just south of Kaupau Place.
The 20-year-old was a passenger on the motorcycle, driven by a 22-year-old man. Both were taken to Queen's. The 22-year old has since been released. Two people in the car suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Forklift mishap injures man at Maili pig farm
A 39-year-old man was injured critically yesterday in a forklift accident at a pig farm in Maili.Fire officials said the man fell off the forklift while unloading bins of pig slop, each weighing between 200 to 300 pounds, at a farm across 87-1301 Paakea Road. He was found semi-conscious, lying on his back with head injuries about 1:24 p.m., said fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.
Tejada said the victim may have been struck by one of the bins.
He was flown to Queen's Medical Center, where he was reported in critical condition this morning.
Police say angry driver wielded baseball bat
Police arrested a 26-year-old man after he allegedly threatened a motorist with a baseball bat in Waipahu late Friday night.A 33-year-old man told police that he honked his horn at a driver in a white BMW who drove along the shoulder to pass him on the ramp to the Koko Head-bound lanes of Farrington Highway from Kunia Road. Later as both vehicles approached Leoku Street in Waipahu, the driver of the BMW suddenly stopped, approached the victim with a bat and allegedly threatened to hit him.
The BMW driver left but the victim spotted a patrol officer and reported the threat. The suspect was arrested later on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
Nanakuli teen held in assault with sword
Police arrested a 17-year-old boy for attempted murder Saturday after he allegedly assaulted a man with a "samurai"-type sword in Nanakuli.Police said the boy was walking home on Hakimo Road about 2:05 a.m. Saturday when a 35-year-old man challenged him to fight, police said. The refused the challenge and tried to leave but was struck in the face.
The boy pulled out a short sword and swung it at the man, leaving a large cut on his left arm, police said.

Club manager loses tooth in alleged assault
Police arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a nightclub manager in Kakaako yesterday.Police said the manger, 35, attempted to break up an argument between two men outside a nightclub around 4 a.m. When he tried to calm them down, one of the men allegedly punched him in the mouth, knocking out a front tooth, police said.
Police arrested the 27-year-old man on suspicion of second-degree assault.
