1969: Vietnam book drive
turns into monthlong project


THE "Paperbacks for Vietnam" event was very successful, writes Wheeler base librarian Arlene Luster, so much so that the project is continuing. Cub Pack 77 will be collecting paperbacks as a December project, and anyone interested in donating paperbacks for Vietnam may deposit them at the Mary Carter Paint Store at 8th and Waialae. JAZZ bassist Ray Brown is relaxing on Maui. Brown was formerly married to Ella Fitzgerald and played with Oscar Peterson's trio and other groups. Ray had many nice comments about the singing of Maui vocalist Lani Groves, currently at the Royal Lahaina. (Nov. 26, 1969) ...

INSPIRED casting: HCT director Newell Tarrant asked Al Eben to play the role of the old furniture dealer in Arthur Miller's "The Price." Eben was in the furniture business for 25 years in L.A. before coming to the islands. (Nov. 26, 1971) ... The Friends of the Hawaiian Music Foundation received a $100 check and a nice note from Regina King, widow of famous Hawaiian songwriter Charles E. King. "Please accept this small check in memory of beloved Charlie," Mrs. King wrote. "I know and you all know how proud he would be of you and your worthwhile work." (Nov. 29, 1971) ...

BACHELOR playboy Alfred Goldman was feeling pretty tired one recent morning following a long night, and demurred when asked if he'd like to play tennis. "Too bad," he was told, "'cause your partner would be Olivia Newton-John." That perked him up and the match was on! (Nov. 29, 1976) ...

ED GREENE, one of the last holdouts against TV football, finally caved in and is now featuring Monday night games and foot-long hot dogs at Jameson's in Merchant Square. ... Statistician Bob Schmit counted up and found he has 150 pairs of socks of various colors and hues, but he defends his ownership of so many pairs by commenting that he has "socks appeal." IT didn't take the gang at Crazy Shirts long to come out with a "Survivor, Hurricane Iwa, Nov. 23, 1982" T-shirt. They stopped production on all other shirts and had some available on Wednesday, the day after the hurricane hit. They should be in stores today. (Nov. 26, 1982) ...

MID-PACIFIC Airline employees should have a happy Christmas -- they'll be receiving their first profit-sharing checks just before he holidays. And if that isn't enough, the company's Christmas party next week will feature popular acts such as Danny Couch, Audy Kimura, Kalapana, Kopono Kaaihue, Brother Noland Conjugation and a 30-member song and dance team called Solid Rust, composed of Mid-Pacific flight attendants. WHOM to root for tomorrow night is a bit of a problem for someone who's attended both the University of Iowa and the University of Hawaii as I have, especially when you've rooted for both schools through the years. But my dilemma is nothing compared to banker Ray Nagel -- he coached Iowa for several years and was athletic director for UH. Happily, we've independently decided to cheer on the Rainbows. LOCALITE Ann Harada, Punahou '81 and Brown grad, opens Dec. 19 opposite B.D. Wong in "M. Butterfly" on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neil Theater. She plays the part of Comrade Chin in this, her first Broadway role. (Nov. 29, 1988) ...

ACTOR Bill Conrad has been popping up around town for the past week -- he's here filming a dozen episodes of "Jake and the Fatman." And now Bob Conrad, also a popular TV actor, is in town for a visit. Alas, the two Conrads are not related. (Nov. 29, 1988) ...

THANKS for Giving: That was the theme at the Windward Mall on Saturday when a dozen KITV staffers pitched in to help the Blood Bank's drive for donors. Some 107 pints were donated, double what was expected, so it was quite a success. (Nov. 24, 1987) ...
