Falconer captures Roxy Pro

Neridah Falconer broke a year-long victory drought to capture the eighth annual Roxy Pro yesterday at Alii Beach in Haleiwa.

Falconer beat reigning world champion and fellow Australian Layne Beachley, Sam Cornish and defending Roxy Pro champ Jacqueline Silva of Brazil.

"This is a real high point for me, and professionally I haven't had any for a while," Falconer said. "I was consistent today. I don't think I was surfing my best, but I persevered with what I had and it paid off.

"The standard of women's surfing has taken another step up," she said. "Across the board everyone has stepped up to the mark and finally there are some good young girls coming up too."

Falconer caught the two biggest waves of the 30-minute final, finishing with 11.67 points out of a possible 20. Beachley was second with 10.57.

The next stop for the women is the Turtle Bay Resort Women's Pro, with a holding period from Nov. 24 to Dec. 7.

Seasiders into finals of Pacific Regional

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. >> Yu Chuan Weng and Ashley Moeai combined for 28 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii past Cal State Los Angeles yesterday in the semifinals of the NCAA Div. II Pacific Regional Women's Volleyball Tournament.

BYUH won 30-24, 30-20, 30-17.

The second-seeded Seasiders (23-2) meet No. 1 seed Cal State San Bernardino in the final today.

BYUH hit .254 in the match. Chun Li Lin added 12 kills and Moeia had a hand in five of the team's 14 blocks.

"That was one of our ugliest victories as far as offense and defense is concerned," said BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta. "We were very helter-skelter in terms of ball control and our defense and we were very fortunate to win. We will have to play better tomorrow to win."

The Seasiders won the NCAA titles in 1999.
