Whales return to Maui
The first of the humpback whales have been sighted off Maui's Southwest shores. The whales observed by naturalists and visitors on three catamarans from the Pacific Whale Foundation were an adult and smaller whale, possibly a yearling.
The whales were accompanied by 12 to 24 bottlenose dolphins leaping around them.
The humpbacks travel about 2,500 to 3,000 miles from their summer feeding areas near Alaska to warmer waters of Maui. While here, the whales mate and give birth to their calves.
The whales don't arrive at once, but arrive throughout the winter, with the majority of whales found from Dec. 1 through May 15.
Once the whaling capital of the world, Lahaina is now the whale-watching capital.
