Players exhibit streetball style

COLLEGE BASKETBALL may have kicked off the preseason Sunday night at UH-Manoa's Stan Sheriff Center, but the real hoop action that evening took place during the first annual Sports and Music Festival at the Blaisdell Arena.

For the first time in Hawaii, representatives of the And 1 Mixtape Players put on an exhibition showcasing the unique (to put it mildly) style of play used by streetball players on the blacktop. AFTER FOUR YEARS of entertaining local football fans with big plays on the football field, former Warrior Nate Jackson needs the public's support in a fight for his health. A viral infection landed Jackson in the hospital a few weeks ago, where he remains while awaiting heart surgery.

Wait, it gets worse: Jackson has a 2-year-old son and another baby on the way next month, and doesn't have medical insurance to cover him or his family. In an effort to deal with the mounting medical bills, the Friends of Nate Jackson have worked hard since his diagnosis to raise funds in the community. One of those events takes place Thursday night at Murphy's Bar and Grill. Tickets are $50 for the benefit, which includes live entertainment and a silent auction. Among the items up for bid include signed memorabilia from Ashley Lelie and Nick Rolovich.

Other ways to help support Jackson include making a donation at booths set up at Aloha Stadium before each of UH's remaining home games, or by buying a pizza from Papa John's next weekend (30 percent of sales will be given to the Friends of Nate Jackson). Call 224-8048 for an address to mail donations ...

A native of New York City, Sinista is a member of the legendary X-Ecutioners and has worked with the likes of The Beatnuts, Common and Fat Joe. Doors open at 9 p.m. Thursday for those 18 and over; call 591-3500 ...
