State Rep. Marumoto files to succeed Mink

Republican state Rep. Barbara Marumoto filed nomination papers yesterday to run in the Jan. 4 special election to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink in the next Congress.

Marumoto, who represents the Kahala and Waialae Iki district in East Oahu, said one of the issues she hopes to promote is greater attention to health issues in Hawaii.

A total of 22 people have filed to run in the Jan. 4 special election. The deadline to file nomination papers is Wednesday.

Others in the race include Democrat Ed Case and Republicans Bob McDermott, Jim Rath, Frank Fasi and John Carroll.

Democratic state Sen. Colleen Hanabusa said she plans to file nomination papers to run for the office Monday.

Incumbent lawmakers do not have to resign their posts to run and can return to their offices if they lose.

One person who won't be in the race is state Sen. Bob Hogue. Hogue said yesterday that he instead will support Marumoto.

High court affirms murderer's sentence

HILO >> The state Supreme Court has affirmed a Big Island jury's finding that the 1999 killing of a 72-year-old woman was "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel."

The high court on Nov. 8 also affirmed Circuit Judge Ronald Ibarra's sentencing of convicted killer Jefferson Pau to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the Hawaii County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday.

A jury convicted Pau, 26, in 2000 of second-degree murder, which carries a life sentence with the possibility of parole. That jury also found he was liable for the enhanced sentence of life without parole.

Evidence showed Ito was stabbed at least 32 times while she tried to defend herself in her home in Keaau, prosecutors said.
