Members of several Hawaii Buddhist organizations will participate in a joint observance of Bodhi Day next month.

The Dec. 8 service and celebration will be held at the new temple of the Nichiren Mission of Hawaii, at 33 Pulelehua Way in Nuuanu. The event, sponsored by the Hawaii Buddhist Council, will begin at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.

Joanne Ninomiya, president of JN Productions and KIKU-TV, will be the guest speaker.

Buddhists around the world celebrate Bodhi Day, marking the occasion 2,500 years ago when Shakyamuni Buddha achieved enlightenment. According to legend, the young nobleman who founded the Buddhist philosophy was seated beneath a bo or bodhi tree when meditation led him to the state of perfect mental clarity.
