earn winsHILO >> Iolani cleared the first obstacle in its quest for the school's first state boys volleyball championship with a 15-3, 15-11 victory over Campbell yesterday.
Sean Carney had four aces as the Raiders eased past the Sabers in the opening round of the Nissan Boys State Volleyball Tournament at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Iolani, last year's state runner-up, advances to face Maui champion Seabury Hall in a quarterfinal match today at 3:30 p.m.
Derrick Low and Chad Miller led Iolani with seven kills each. Kainoa Rapoza led Campbell with seven kills.
Mililani knocked off Maui 15-10, 15-11 and will face Kealakehe tonight at 8. Ryan Gonzales had 17 kills and Justin Himori 14 for the Trojans.
Ka'u advanced to today's 5 p.m. match against top seed and defending state champion Kamehameha. The Trojans rallied past Leilehua 10-15, 15-8, 15-6 behind Elias Navarro and Jason Villa, who had 15 kills each.
In the nightcap, Waiakea defeated Kauai champ Waimea 15-13, 15-12 to earn a date with second-seeded Pearl City at 6:30 p.m.
ILH girls playoff set: The ILH's second entrant in next week's girls state volleyball tournament will be decided by a three-team playoff this weekend.
Punahou, La Pietra and Iolani finished the second round of the ILH season tied for second at 2-2. Kamehameha clinched the league title by going 15-0 overall.
Punahou plays La Pietra at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupi'o Gym. The winner plays Iolani at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kamehameha.
