California’s Igber accepts
Hula Bowl Maui invite


Iolani School graduate Joe Igber, a senior tailback for California, has accepted an invitation to play in the 2003 Hula Bowl Maui.

The 5-foot-8 Igber, the 1998 Hawaii Offensive Player of the Year, is one of the all-time leading rushers in Cal history. He is currently the leading senior rusher in the Pac-10, fourth overall, with 196 rushing attempts for 814 yards and five touchdowns.

The game is scheduled for Feb. 1 at War Memorial Stadium.

Marathon entries from Japan on rise

Runners from Japan are doing their best to make the 30th Honolulu Marathon the largest ever.

As of yesterday, there were 16,168 entrants from Japan, a 161 percent increase over last year's number of 6,194. This is the most Japanese entries since 1997.

With 24 days remaining until the Dec. 8 race, there are 28,112 total entries. Last year's total was 23,513.

HPU takes on all-star team

The Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team opens its first season under new coach Russell Dung tonight with an exhibition against the Northwest All-Stars.

The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mid-Pacific's Mills Gym. The Sea Warriors also play an exhibition against China's junior national team at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Blaisdell Arena.

HPU opens the regular season Nov. 25 against St. Mary's of Texas at MPI at 7:30 p.m. The Sea Warriors return five players from last year's 18-9 team.

4 Hawaii players earn soccer honors

Four soccer players from Hawaii were cited for their play this fall by the Northwest Conference coaches.

Ryan Stanley, a senior goalkeeper for Pacific, is a first-team selection on the all-NWC men's team.

The Kaiser graduate finished with 82 saves and a 1.36 goals against average, ranking him fourth and sixth in the conference. For his career, Stanley finished with a 1.34 goals-against average and 345 saves.

Kurt Kagawa was a honorable mention choice. The junior midfielder for Whitworth is a Mililani graduate.

Forward Joni Kaitoku, a sophomore from Mililani who prepped at Iolani, and midfielder Moani Lau, a junior from Honolulu and a Kamehameha graduate, were honorable mention selections on the women's team. Both play for Pacific.

BYUH's Lin cited again

For the fourth time this season, Brigham Young-Hawaii freshman Chun Yi Lin was named the Pacific West Conference's Player of the Week in women's volleyball.

Lin, a middle blocker from Taiwan, led the sixth-ranked Seasiders to two wins over Chaminade that clinched the PacWest title. She hit over .500 in both matches.
