In a game of adjustments, the Kamehameha girls volleyball team made the switches necessary to pull off a 15-7, 15-12, 6-15, 15-11 victory over Iolani yesterday to clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu second-round title and overall league championship.

Kamehameha had already clinched a berth in the state tournament, which takes place later this month. The ILH's second state berth has not been decided yet.

The name of the game is really adjustments -- seeing what Iolani is going to do and having the girls play different positions on the court, according to Kamehameha coach Joey Miyashiro.

"What makes our team really good is that there's no questions like, 'What, coach, I have to play middle now?'," she said.

Kamehameha jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first game. The Raiders pulled within 11-7 before the Warriors scored the last four points to win the game.

In the second game, Miyashiro threw in her second string and Kamehameha took a 6-1 lead before fending off a fierce Raider rally.

In the third game, the Warriors' starters re-entered the game and struggled, keeping Iolani in the match.

The momentum from the third game carried Iolani into Game 4, and the Raiders took leads of 4-0 and 9-6. Pono Fernandez had three of Iolani's four blocks during that stretch.

Kamehameha broke a 10-10 tie on Lori Nakamura's service ace and got its next point off an Iolani hitting error. Mounia Nihipali finished the game with a flurry, putting down four of her team's last five kills.

Nihipali said the team had to regroup, especially after Ponce went down with an injury in Game 4.

"All of us as individuals had to pick it up a lot."

St. Joseph sweeps to BIIF title: The St. Joseph girls volleyball team completed an undefeated season in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation on Friday night with a 15-0, 15-0 sweep of Hawaii Prep at Kealakehe gym.

The Cardinals finished the BIIF campaign at 14-0 to claim the league championship and a seeded berth in the Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association girls volleyball championship set for Nov. 20-23 in Hilo.

Kealakehe captured the BIIF boys title with a 14-16, 15-6, 15-3 win over Waiakea. The Waveriders enter this week's state tournament with a record of 13-1.
