Senior days, awards
signal end of season

As the collegiate soccer season winds down, careers end and awards are earned. All that remains is conference and national postseason tournaments.

The seniors Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., honored yesterday included five Hawaii players.

Ryan Stanley (Kaiser) was a four-year goalkeeper. He played in all 83 matches for the Boxers. Stanley, a political science major, was a second-team all-Northwest Conference pick as a sophomore and junior. He holds the Boxers' single-season record for saves (122) and has 18 career shutouts.

Kaleo Titcomb, a four-year defender/midfielder, started eight of 18 matches this season and scored his only collegiate goal against Walla Walla this year. The Kamehameha grad and business major played in 44 matches for Pacific.

Kevin Arizo (Mililani) started all 18 matches this year and has seen action in 71 during his career. The four-year midfielder has career totals of two goals and three assists. He is majoring in exercise science.

Shanell Kawasaki (Kamehameha) has roamed the midfield in 43 matches over three seasons. The exercise major has one career goal and recorded two assists this season while playing in 19 matches.

Aaron Arakawa (Pearl City) has junior eligibility, but academically is a senior. He will graduate next semester. The midfielder scored three goals in 17 matches in 2002.

Three of the top five Pacific women's scorers are underclassmen from Hawaii.

Joni Kaitoku (Iolani), a sophomore striker, is second with six goals and two assists. Junior striker Moani Lau (Kamehameha) is fourth with four goals and two assists, and Kaleinani Titcomb (Kamehameha), a sophomore midfielder/striker, is fifth with two goals and four assists.

Elsewhere

Duke Hashimoto assisted on the first and third goals Friday night as fourth-ranked Southern Methodist (15-1-3) beat Evansville 4-0 in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

A freshman striker from Iolani, Hashimoto has started 16 of 18 matches. He has tallied four goals and now has five assists for 13 points, fourth best for the Mustangs.

Adam Sthay is 9-1-1 with a 0.69 goals allowed per match average as the No. 1 goalkeeper for the Loyola Marymount Lions (13-2-2), ranked No. 13 this week. The Punahou grad has four shutouts.

Charlene Lui (Punahou) has been named to the all-Mountain West Conference second team. The freshman midfielder for Brigham Young (15-5-0), started 18 of 19 matches, scored three goals and assisted on one.

Kurt Kagawa (Mililani) has been named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 men's soccer team. The team represents players on NCAA Division II and III and NAIA teams.

Kagawa is a junior midfielder for the Whitworth Pirates with a 3.793 grade point average as a political studies major.

Unfortunately, Kagawa suffered a broken collarbone in a 1-0 win over Pacific last Saturday. He had started all 18 matches for the 11-7-1 Pirates, scoring three goals and contributing two assists.
